Summary
The Institutional Care Plan (ICP) module is a powerful new feature designed to help facilities proactively manage and monitor key aspects of their animal collections. With ICP, users can tag species as High Risk, Invasive, or Key Species to support strategic planning and collection oversight. The module also enables users to set Target or Ideal population quantities for each species, ensuring population goals are clearly defined and tracked. Additionally, the Unusual Mortality Monitor tool allows users to configure alerts based on customizable mortality thresholds; either as a percentage of the total population or a specific species within a Company/Facility/Habitat over a specified time period. This can help support early detection of concerning trends and enhancing institutional response capabilities.
Species Tags
The ICP module allows users to classify species using specialized tags to aid in collection management and institutional planning. Below are definitions for each tag type:
- High Risk Species: Species that pose a handling or safety risk due to characteristics such as venom, aggression, size, or other hazardous traits. These animals may require additional training, equipment, or protocols to manage safely.
- Invasive Species: Non-native species that have the potential to cause ecological or economic harm if introduced into the local environment. These species are monitored to prevent unintended proliferation or escape; and often featured in educational displays to raise awareness about the environmental risks they pose.
- Key Species: Species identified as part of an institutional or broader species preservation initiative. These animals are typically prioritized for conservation, breeding, or research efforts due to their ecological or genetic importance.
Target Quantities
User-defined population goals for each species in a facility’s collection. These quantities represent the ideal or desired number of individuals needed to maintain a healthy, balanced, and sustainable population. Tracking target quantities helps guide collection planning, transfers, and breeding decisions.
Unusual Mortality Monitor
A configurable tool that allows users to track unexpected patterns of death within a species or habitat. Users can define alert thresholds based on a percentage of animals or species in a Company, Facility or Habitat that die within a specified time frame (e.g., 30 days). When these thresholds are met or exceeded, the system flags the event for review, supporting early detection and response to potential health or environmental concerns.
Navigating to the ICP
- Select Zoological Operations from the Company Navigator dropdown menu.
- Click on the ICP tab in the top navigation bar.NOTE: The Zoological Operations selection is only available to Users who are granted Secondary Access to the module within User Management.
Tagging Species
- Use the Species search field to find and select the animal species you wish to tag.
- In the Type dropdown, select one or more applicable tags for the selected species. These options are not mutually exclusive. You may apply multiple tags to the same record as needed.
- In the Apply to dropdown menu, select either Company or Facility. This designates the hierarchy this tag should be applied to. NOTE: If you select Company in this step, no further selections are required and you can submit the record now by clicking the Apply button.
- If this tag is specific to a single Facility, or further a specific Habitat, select the appropriate choices from the dropdown menu. IMPORTANT: If you ONLY select a Facility and leave the Habitat field blank, the tag will be applied at the Facility level. If you select a Habitat from the dropdown menu, the tag will be applied to the Habitat level.
- Once all selections are made, click the Apply button.
Setting Target Quantities
- Use the Species search field to find and select an animal species to assign a target/ideal quantity.
- In the Type dropdown, select Target/Ideal Quantity.
- In the Target field, enter the target/ideal quantity for the species.
- In the Apply to dropdown menu, select either Company or Facility. This designates the hierarchy that the Target/Ideal Quantity should be applied to. NOTE: If you select Company in this step, no further selections are required and you can submit the record now by clicking the Apply button.
- If the target quantity is specific to a single Facility, or further a specific Habitat, select the appropriate choices from the dropdown menu. IMPORTANT: If you ONLY select a Facility and leave the Habitat field blank, the target quantity will be applied at the Facility level. If you select a Habitat from the dropdown menu, the target quantity will be applied to the Habitat level.
- Once all selections are made, click the Apply button.
Setting Up the Unusual Mortality Monitor
- Use the Species search field to find and select the animal species you are configuring the Unusual Mortality Monitor for.
- Select Unusual Mortality Monitor from the In the Type dropdown field.
- In the % of Species field, enter a number that will represent the percentage (which will be used over a period of time) that will trigger a notice when that threshold is met for mortality transactions recorded.
- In the Period field, enter the number of days that should be applied to the percentage threshold. For example, if the % of Species is 10 and the Period is 30; the Unusual Mortality Monitor will notify you if there are more than 10 percent mortalities recorded for the selected species within the past 30 days. The Period is a running target and is always a lookback from the current date.
